#WorkingInWind with SEP

Posted 17 June 2025

Global Wind Day is all about celebrating the people and projects driving the transition to clean energy.

At SEP Hydrographic, that transition starts below the surface with the precise seabed data that makes offshore wind farms possible.

As part of our #WorkingInWind series, we caught up with Luca Pitt, Hydrographic Surveyor at SEP, to hear what life’s really like offshore, and why seabed mapping is more than just charts and coordinates.

What’s one thing people often misunderstand about surveying for offshore wind?

A common misconception is that offshore wind work is mostly about turbines, but the success of a project heavily depends on what happens below the surface. Accurate seabed mapping, geophysical conditions and sub-seabed data are all critical in deciding where offshore wind installations should be placed.

What advice would you give someone thinking about a career as a Hydrographic Surveyor?

Be prepared for a dynamic career that is constantly evolving with updated technology and analytical techniques. In hydrographic survey, no two days are the same. If you are curious about the ocean, enjoy technology and are driven by discovery, then this is the role for you!

Do you have a favourite part of your role?

I enjoy the fast-paced, hands-on nature of working offshore. Monitoring live data as it comes in, knowing that the data collected will be used for the success of a project. Whether it's multibeam bathymetry, side scan sonar or a magnetometer, every ping and data stream counts.

Luca’s role is just one part of the wider effort to power clean energy projects from the seabed up. Offshore wind relies on reliable data, clear insights, and experienced survey teams, and we’re proud to play our part.
